Prosodic Alteration
The prosodic pattern of her
spontaneous speech sounded slightly deviate from native Spanish, with
inappropriate pitch excursions in some intra -sentence words.
Comparative analyses with control subjects of fundamental frequency contours in
a sentence-repetition task showed that FT roughly preserves the normal
overall pattern in statements, questions, and compound sentences, but she
introduces changes in word- and syllable-level contours. In this task, FT’s
speech also showed a deviation from the normal rhythmic-temporal pattern of Spanish.
In Spanish, accented vowels are on average longer than unaccented vowels.
Control subject exhibited normal duration differences [t(336)= 2.62, p<.01],
but FT did not [t(336)= .23, p=.817].
